Micky van de Ven found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - notched his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, combining well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and time to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
