The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Perth.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of taking part.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Backup Options
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
